As from 1st October 2022, all citizens and residents in Malta and Gozo who hold a personalized Tallinja Card are entitled to benefit from free public transport service, as announced by the Government of Malta during the October 2021 Budget speech. Free public transport service was already available to persons between the ages of 14 to 20 years, persons with disability, students 21 years and over, and persons 70 years and over until 30th September 2022. With this measure, all the other cohorts are now also entitled to free public transport. This means that whereas are entitled to free public transport. This means that whereas until 30th September 2022 129,826 persons were entitled to travel for free, thanks to this measure more than 501,779 persons are entitled to free public transport. 

The aim of this measure is to encourage more people to make use of the public transport service so that the general public will have a good alternative to car usage. The increase in use of public transport will result in less pollution and gas emissions on Maltese roads with an improved healthy environment and better air quality.

To benefit from this service, one should register for a personalised Tallinja Card by clicking here.  The card should be tapped to the ticketing machine available near the driver upon boarding a bus. Tallinja Cards are essential as they allow the operator to access statistical information aimed to enhance the service in the future.

Anyone who has still not obtained a personalised Tallinja Card can apply for free until the end of February 2024. This limited-time initiative is aimed to further increase the use of public transport service.
